The Pittsford Varsity S’Women out swam their Fairport opponents in one of the top dual meets in New York State, but they lost the meet 92-88 because of a technicality. The coaches, the athletes and the fans knew the meet was going to be close, but no one ever imagined that it would come down to 3 inches. During the warm-ups just before diving was to take place, a measurement of the distance from board to water was requested. Regulations state that the distance from board to water should be 1 meter and on this fateful day, the measurement came up a little over 3 inches short of that. New York State Public High School Athletic Association rules state that the home team forfeits the diving in this situation. This move cost the Pittsford divers at least 6 points which would have ultimately turned the final score in favor of the S’Women. But despite the adversity, the Pittsford swimmers and divers put in a strong performance against a perennially strong Fairport team. Coach Marty Keating said that everything went according to his plan and his S’Women measured up to his expectations, but nothing you do could anticipate a turn of events such as this.
The depth of the S’Women was showcased when Keating split up his 200 yard medley relay teams to take the top 2 places in the opening event of the meet. Jenny Lewis, Jessie Ward, Aly Criscuolo and Emma Miller finished first and teammates Lindsay Wahl, Stephanie Ross, Meghan Green and Kelley Groves battled to a 2nd place finish. Miller, Alex Trobe and Jennifer Conklin finished 2-3-4 behind Fairport’s Lauren Dufault to outscore the “She-Sharks” in the 200 yard freestyle. Wahl won the 200 yard individually medley with Sarah Dempsey in 4th. Groves and Katie Dobler sprinted to 3rd and 4th places finishes behind Fairport’s Erin McGraw and Devina Tyagi.
The diving was forfeited so Fairport received 10 unanswered points. Dempsey, Conklin and Criscuolo finished 2-3-5 behind Dufault in the 100 yard butterfly. Lewis finished close behind McGraw in the 100 yard freestyle with Groves and Trobe in 4th and 5th. Miller, Trobe and Green swept the 500 yard freestyle for a big score in that event. Fairport coach Mike Kennedy took a page from Coach Keating’s playbook and split his 200 yard freestyle relay teams taking the top 2 finishes with Pittsford’s Kelly Geary, Dobler, Conklin and Trobe in 3rd.
Lewis won the 100 yard backstroke in 57.32, which earned her automatic All-American honors, with teammate Wahl touching in 2nd with a lifetime best time. Olivia Tylutki touched 4th with another strong performance. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Ward was narrowly beaten by Jenna Wood and Ross finished 5th.
The meet was still undecided going into the final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay. Despite strong performances, the team of Wahl, Dempsey, Groves and Lewis finished 2nd and Geary, Dobler, Conklin and Trobe in 3rd.
The Junior Varsity S’Women faired better, extending their 8 season undefeated streak, winning every event, with a 125-51 victory. Kelsey McManus, Danielle Phillips, Katherine Ross and Grace Encherman won the 200 yard medley relay with Kaelen Fennel, Mallory Ward, Katie Hart and Erin Connelly in 2nd. Maddy Ashworth won the 200 yard freestyle with Emily DiPaulo and Tess Ciaccio in 2nd and 5th. McManus won the 200 yard individual medley with Ross in 2nd and Bonita Sur in 5th. Maggie Craig, Encherman and Hart sprinted to a 1-2-4 finish in the 50 yard freestyle. Diving was forfeited.
McManus and Ross finished 1-2 in the 100 yard butterfly. DiPaulo, Craig and Connelly swept the 100 yard freestyle. Encherman, Lydia Hunt and Ciaccio also swept the 500 yard freestyle. DiPaulo, Ashworth, Craig and Ross won the 200 yard freestyle relay with teammates Hart, Deniz Harland, Connellly and Ward in 3rd.
Ashworth, Emily Carroll and Fennel finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the 100 yard backstroke. Phillips, Ward and Harland finished 1st, 2nd and 5th in the 100 yard breaststroke. Ashworth, Encherman, DiPaulo and McManus took top honors in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Hunt, Fennel, Vicky Lagas and Harland finished in 3rd.
Earlier in the week, both Varsity and JV S’Women topped the Webster Schroeder Warriors at he Webster Aquatic Center.
The S’Women now turn their attention to two more meetings with the Faiport She-Sharks. They return to Owego Free Academy for the Empire Invitational where they will compete against teams that include Fairport and Ithaca on Saturday, October 7th. But the ultimate contest with Faiport will be at the Section V championships in November where the S’Women hope to show everyone just how well they “measure” up.
