The Pittsford Varsity Swimming and Diving Team won their 4th consecutive Section V Class A championship, totaling 354 points to 2nd place Fairport’s 330. Senior Hailey Weniger was named Monroe County Division 1 Swimmer of the Year. Weniger has been a key member of the S’Women for the past 5 years. Her versatility and fast times earned her that honor for the past 2 years.
This victory was another testament to the depth of the S’Women with 17 swmmers and 2 divers making it back to the finals. The team effort was a tribute to many hours of training that the S’Women have put in under the tutelage of Coach Marty Keating since the start of the “preseason” in mid-August.
Arguably, the performance of the meet was that of sophomore Jenny Lewis who won the 100 yard freestyle in 53.08, setting a school record, and the 100 yard backstroke in 56.65, setting a school record, meet record and Section V record as well as qualifying her for automatic All-American status. She was also a member of the winning 200 yard medley relay team, setting a school record of 1:48.90 in automatic All-American time. She also swam on the 200 yard freestyle relay team that finished in 2nd place.
Hailey Weniger won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:02.45, breaking her own school record and qualifying her for All-American consideration. She finished 2nd in a very fast 200 yard freestyle race and was a key member of the 2nd place 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams.
Sophomore Kelley Groves was the third S’Women individual winner, the “fastest swimmer in Section V,” winning the 50 yard freestyle in 24.70 and finishing 4th in the 100 yard freestyle. She was also a member of the winning 200 yard medley and the 2nd place 200 yard freestyle relay.
Junior Lindsay Wahl finished 2nd in the 100 yard backstroke, 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle and was a member of the 400 yard freestyle relay team. Junior Jessie Ward finished 3rd in the 100 yard breaststroke and was a member of the record setting 200 yard medley relay team. Freshman Alex Trobe finished a strong 3rd in the 500 yard freestyle and 6th in the 200 yard freestyle. Freshman Emma Miller finished 4th in the 500 yard freestyle and 7th in the 200 yard freestyle.
Senior Jenna Arington finished 5th in the 50 yard freestyle and 6th in the 100 yard freestyles and was a member of the 2nd place 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays. Sophomore Aly Criscuolo took 5th place in both the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard butterfly. She also swam on the winning 200 yard medley relay team. Freshman Meghan Green finished 6th in the 200 yard individual medley and the 500 yard freestyle and 2nd as a member of the 400 yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Olivia Tylutki swam a strong race in the 100 yard backstroke finishing 6th.
Senior Emily Wells finished 7th in the 200 yard individual medley and 10th in the 100 yard butterfly. The future of the S’Women appears to be in good hands with eighth graders Sarah Dempsey who finished 8th in the 200 yard freestyle and Jennifer Conklin who finished 9th in the 100 yard butterfly. Sophomore Stephanie Ross finished 9th in the 100 yard breaststroke with junior teammate Claire Geiser in 11th. Freshman Katie Dobler finished 12th in the 100 yard backstroke.
Other members of the S’Women sectional team included junior Mandy Ellis in the breaststroke, sophomore Lindsay Matthews in the freestyle and Rachel House in the butterfly.
Earlier in the month, the diving sectionals were held where senior Eliza Massie finished 4th and sophomore Morgan Neal 10th. Seventh grader Katelyn Barclay and sophomore Rachel Delahunta also dove in the sectional meet.
Members of the S’Women who will compete at the State Championships next weekend in Buffalo include Arington, Massie, Weniger, Wahl, Ward, Criscuolo, Groves, Lewis, Tylutki, Green, Miller and Trobe.
No matter how you look at the accomplishments of the S’Women this year, the entire team has put in the necessary effort to come out on top of the competition. Coach Keating has once again instilled a work ethic in the team which produces champions. There are no shortcuts, there is no sliding by and the timing system does not lie.
